A standard definition of a business consultant is that they: work with clients on strategy, planning and problem solving, and helps clients develop business skills and knowledge. These topics range from designing a business model or marketing plan, to sales coaching and determining which marketing techniques to use and how to use them.

I would love to help you with your business, but even if I don’t, I want to make sure you bring the right help to your business. Since being a business consultant can can cover a lot of different areas, before hiring a business consultant, I would recommend asking them a few questions. You want to make sure that they have the background and experience helping businesses like yours. Here are a few things you want to know up front before considering working with them:

What industries do they have experience in?

What size companies(# of employees and revenue) have they worked with and which do they feel most comfortable with?

What is their background?

Do they have references?

You may have more questions directly relating to your business, but make sure to cover these as well.
